Doing proper due diligence on a potential product

There is no right or wrong way to conducting good business research.  All it takes is patience and a little effort on your part to look into every aspect of the product.  Sometimes all you need is common sense, yet others, takes minimal research online or a few phone calls to evaluate the
potential of a product.

It is very important that you research your product thoroughly. Without the proper knowledge, a bad product can cause frustration and destruction of your business.  A good product, on the other hand, will be the cornerstone that grows your business into the future.

The library and Internet are good resources to use.  It is usually easier to find information on good products with a solid reputation.  Most companies are only too happy to brag about a great product.

3 Steps to Evaluate a Product

Rely on your experience.  All great success stories begin with a person that has knowledge or a great interest in the product they're selling.  Is the product interesting to you?  Will you use it on a continuing basis?  What is the life expectancy of the product?  Do you know people that are
familiar with the product?

Let's examine scrapbook supplies.  Everyone is talking about them.  Over the years, scrapbook stores and scrapbook courses have been growing in popularity.  More and more magazines are listing articles on 'how to create a scrap-book' and 'where to find materials'.  If you can think of
several people who would purchase scrapbook supplies, it's a safe bet you can proceed to the next step in the product research process.

You should consider the advice of friends and family when evaluating a product.  Provide these trusted confidantes with any literature that you have accumulated on the product during your investigation.  You are looking for their honest assessment of product price, quality, and any
warranty.  Most importantly, be sure to ask them if the product is something they would actually consider using.

Remember that you are not consulting with your friends and family in order to solicit their business.  You are more interested in an accurate and honest evaluation of the product than in securing a few sales.  This is market research and you just want to know what people are looking
for and these people are the ones most likely to give you an honest answer.  You can even generate a brief questionnaire for them to answer about the item in question.

The company making the product will know how well their item does in the market so work with them to find out all they know.  It is impossible to believe that they would not conduct their own market research so do not be afraid to ask to see some of it, especially that from current owners.  Look for demographic data of the target audience so you know who exactly you are going to be selling to.

An informed opinion about the product's potential in the marketplace and value is possible after you have gathered all the information possible.  All you really need to know now is if there is a real need for this product in the marketplace so do not rush into making a decision prior to bringing all of your tools to bear analyzing the item..
