Insurance has been
an institution of human society for thousands of years. It was practiced by
Babylonian traders as long ago as the 2nd millennium BCE. The history
of insurance is fascinating – it was important to early Mediterranean
sailing merchants, and the Greeks and Romans had ‘benevolent societies’ that
cared for the families and funeral expenses of its members. Guilds in the Middle
Ages had a similar function.
Gradually, insurance became much more
sophisticated in Europe. In America, Benjamin Franklin was instrumental in
popularizing and standardizing insurance practices, especially those concerned
with fire insurance. Insurance continues to
evolve according to the requirements of our ever-changing society, but its
benefits remain unchanged and of the greatest importance to all, whether
individuals, families or businesses, great and small.
